Note Positioning

From the Properties Table, select from several options when positioning notes.

Auto Position
Auto-positioned notes take the attachment points of existing notes into account when positioning a note, as well as the actual location of the notes. The auto-positioning settings are applied on a per-note basis, not as a general setting.
Auto Position overrules the Auto Position Strategy option. Both the Auto Position Strategy drop-down menu and the Auto Position Offset field disappear when Auto Position is disabled.
Auto positioning notes when loading a report template overrules relative positioning (Auto Position Strategy) in the following way:
  • If you select Auto Position Strategy, the first notes are drawn according to the selected Auto Position Strategy.
  • If a second report is overlaid over the first, the Auto Position Strategy is set to No overlap.
When Auto Position is not selected, only the Attach To drop-down menu is displayed, allowing you to attach the note to a window, the view, a curve, or XY coordinates (see descriptions below).
Auto Position Strategy
Select one of the following options to specify the relative location of the note (this option is disabled unless the note is attached to a curve):
  • Above left
  • Above center
  • Above right
  • Left
  • Center (formerly known as “Place note on curve point”)
  • Right
  • Below left
  • Below center
  • Below right
You can select a default position from the position options in the drop-down menu, which will be applied when new notes are created. This setting is saved in the hwsettings.xml file.
The positioning settings are saved for both session files and report templates.
Auto Position Offset
You can set the padding/distance between notes as a percentage of the screen (default value: 3%). For example, if you want to set the value to 5%, “5” should be entered into the edit field, not “0.05”. Due to the fact that the axes normally have different units and scaling factors, the algorithm calculates the distance for only one axis and scales the distance for other axis so that the leaders have an angle of 45 degrees, if above left/right or below left/right are selected.
Attach To
The Attach To drop-down menu allows you to specify how a note is displayed in the window. Notes can be anchored one of four ways, which are described below. Once attached, notes can be positioned as described above. When a curve is either cut or copied, notes attached to the curve are also cut or copied. Notes can also be attached to curves using the Templex statements attach_note_at and attach_note_to.
Window
The note remains stationary when the plot is repositioned in the window.
View
The note moves with the plot when the plot is repositioned in the window.
Curve
A leader connects the note to a specific point on the curve and the note moves with the plot when the plot is repositioned in the window. This is not available for bar charts.
When you select Curve as the attachment type, the following fields are displayed in the Properties Table:
  • Attachment Curve - Select a curve from the drop-down menu to attach the note to.
  • Attachment Point - Enter the point on the curve where you want to attach the note.
Coordinates
A leader connects the note to a specific point on the plot. This is not available for bar charts.
When you select Coordinates as the attachment type, the following fields are displayed:
  • Attachment X Coordinate - Enter the X coordinate value.
  • Attachment Y Coordinate - Enter the Y coordinate value.
