Rotate, Pan, Zoom, Fit, Center

Adjust your view of the model in the modeling window.

Rotate

Rotate the view to inspect different areas of the model.

Rotate in the following ways:

  • Use the left, right, up and down arrow keys to rotate the model incrementally.
  • Hold down the Ctrl key, then click-and-drag on the model in the modeling window.
  • Use the tools on the 3D View Control toolbar to rotate the view.
    To rotate Do this
    Dynamically/spin Click .
    • Left-click: Dynamic rotate mode
    • Right-click: Dynamic spin mode
    Left/Right Click .
    • Left-click: Rotate left
    • Right-click: Rotate right
    Up/Down Click .
    • Left-click: Rotate up
    • Right-click: Rotate down
    Clockwise/counter-clockwise Click .
    • Left-click: Rotate clockwise
    • Right-click: Rotate counter-clockwise
  • Use the tools on the Standard Views toolbar to select commonly used view angles.

Pan

Move the view horizontally and vertically in the modeling window.

Pan the view in the following ways:

  • On the 3D View Controls toolbar, click .
    • Left-click: Pan mode
    • Right-click: Center model mode
  • While pressing Ctrl, right-click and drag the model.
    The cursor changes to dynamic center mode, while pressing Ctrl and right-clicking.

Zoom

Zoom in to view specific areas of the model, and zoom out to see a more overall view of the model.

Zoom in the following ways:

  • Hold down the Ctrl key, while scrolling the mouse wheel in the modeling window.
    • Zoom in by scrolling forward.
    • Zoom out by scrolling backward.
  • Press + on the keyboard to zoom in, or press - to zoom out.
    These two functions increase or decrease the current window by the user-defined factor specified on the modeling subpanel on the Options panel.
  • Perform circle zoom.
    1. Press z on the keyboard.
      The status bar displays a message requesting you to circle the area of the model to be more closely investigated.
    2. While left-clicking, move the mouse to circle the area to be zoomed in on.
      A trailer line appears wherever the mouse is moved. The area circled is used to recalculate the window when the mouse button is released.
    3. Release the mouse button.
  • Use the tools on the 3D View Control toolbar to zoom.
    To zoom Do this
    Zoom Click .
    • Left-click: Zoom in with a factor of 2x
    • Right-click: Zoom out with a factor of 2x
    Circle/Dynamic Zoom Click .
    • Left-click: Circle zoom mode
    • Right-click: Dynamic zoom mode

Fit

Adjust the view to fit the model or selected objects in the modeling window.

Fit the view in the following ways:

  • Place your cursor in the modeling window, then press F.
  • On the Standard Views toolbar, click .
    • Left-click: Fit model
    • Right-click: Fit all frames
Tip: Automatic full screen refreshes are kept to a minimum. If the screen appears messy or inaccurate after entities have been plotted and erased, press the P key to refresh the screen. The model and/or the window are not resized when you refresh the screen.

Set Center of Rotation

Translation of the model, also called panning, is performed by selecting a new center for the current window.

  1. Press C on the keyboard.
  2. Move the mouse into the graphics area.
    The current center is indicated by a small white box.
  3. Move the mouse to the point where you want the new center located and click the left mouse button. The center relocates.
  4. Exit by moving the mouse into the menu area, by clicking the right mouse button, or by pressing any key.
